My Furry Valentine is committed to the vision of a world where there is no more shelter euthanasia. A world where there is no longer a need for a mega pet adoption event. A time when we become a “No Kill” nation! But until that day comes, we will continue our efforts to educate our community about the importance of adoption while providing a platform to connect animals in need of a home with people willing to give them one. In doing so, we will be working alongside our rescue, shelter and other animal welfare counterparts who are implementing spay and neuter, foster care, trap-neuter-return, foster networks, pet retention, and other comprehensive adoption programs, all with the ultimate goal of one day becoming a “No Kill” nation. With every event My Furry Valentine hosts, and every animal adopted, we are one step closer to that goal.
Every day, an average of 9,000 cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters across the United States. In fact, euthanasia is the leading cause of untimely death for healthy dogs and cats in our country. Each year, 7.3 million animals enter shelters nationwide, patiently, hopefully, waiting to catch the eye of one of the 12 million families who will bring a new pet into their home. But many Americans still get their new pets from places other than rescues and shelters, and so an estimated 3-4 million animals die unnecessarily every year.
We can change that!
If just 1 out of every 5 people bringing a new pet into their family were to adopt from a shelter or rescue, the Humane Society of the United States estimates that not one single healthy cat or dog would lose his or her life in a shelter. While these statistics don’t tell the whole story, they hopefully reinforce the notion that by welcoming an adoptable animal into your family, you’re doing more than saving one life – you’re helping us rewrite the script for all homeless animals.
Since our inception in 2012, My Furry Valentine has grown in size and popularity. It is through the help of countless numbers of friends, colleagues, and volunteers that My Furry Valentine has become one of the largest animal adoption events in the country! The hundreds of adoptions that take place during our event give homeless animals the chance they deserve at joining a loving home and family.
The My Furry Valentine events are only made possible through our host, sponsors, funders, donations from individuals, participating vendors and business donors, advertising/PR/media partners, our event volunteers, and our rescue and shelter partners who work tirelessly each and every day throughout the year, with an unyielding passion and commitment to the cause, the My Furry Valentine Organizing Committee who volunteer thousands of hours into bringing the adoption events to the Cincinnati community, and most of all, our event attendees who come to support and adopt.
