I’d like to introduce you to Tetra, one of 11 puppies abandoned in a box in the snow outside the shelter on a day cold winter day…
Tetra eventually made his way to our 2016 My Furry Valentine Adoption Event and found his forever home last February, along with 812 other animals. But he and his littermates are amongst the lucky ones – not all stories of homeless animals have such a happy ending.
Shelters are no place for a puppy, and they don’t always have the space and resources to keep puppies until they are old enough for the adoption floor. They can’t afford to tie up valuable kennel space for the 8 -10 weeks it takes until puppies are old enough to be put up for adoption. It would mean they’d have to turn away other adoptable dogs that could be in and out of those kennels in that time. These are the kinds of difficult heartbreaking decisions that shelters face each and every day. Tetra and his littermates faced an uncertain fate, left cold, scared and alone outside a closed shelter. Thankfully they were found in time, and taken in by a local rescue. Many times, commitment from a rescue group is their only way out. In this case, Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue stepped in to care for these 11 puppies.
Many shelters and rescue groups are run on shoestring budgets and the sheer love, grit and tears of their volunteers. Yet, despite their best efforts, some 2.7 million healthy, adoptable animals are still euthanized in our country each year. However, we are making great strides in our community to bring this number down, and there are lots of reasons to be hopeful. We have many happy endings to share – especially when we work together. Louie’s Legacy took a risk and decided to take in such a large litter of puppies, knowing that they had the support of a mega adoption to connect with an audience of 14,000 potential adopters to help find homes for so many puppies. Tetra, Trout, Angelfish, Beluga, Koi, Flounder, Salmon, Marlin, Orca, Goldfish and Guppy were saved because of My Furry Valentine.
